My semester abroad is over and I am so sad. I will miss Korea because the food there is so delicious and reasonably priced. I will also miss all of my Korean friends. This post is to show how I have changed from the experience of studying in Korea.
One of the biggest changes that I went through while studying abroad was becoming more comfortable with asking for help. In Hawaii, I am usually able to do a lot of things on my own, like finding the location of a building or how to send a letter. If I do not know something I can also look on the internet. In Korea, I always had to ask other people for help because I could not do a lot of basic tasks since I can only read English.
Eventually I started to ask Korean people for help naturally whenever I was confused. I ended up being able to figure out things faster by asking for help. Most people were also nice about helping me and I made Korean friends outside of the school.
Another way I transformed was my different views of Hawaii. I liked many parts of Korea better than Hawaii, but by the end of the semester abroad I really missed the weather in Hawaii. The cold weather in Korea was fun in the beginning and seeing snow on campus was cool, but I was tired of the coldness after a couple of weeks. I learned to appreciate Hawaii much more and I feel so lucky to live here. I think this also made me more respectful of the environment. Now I am one of those people who always say the weather is so nice.
My ideas about transportation has also changed. Before going to Korea, I always wanted to drive everywhere and park as close as I could to my destination. In Korea, I learned to enjoy walking and being able to get places on foot or with public transportation. This is a big change for me because I used to always complain about walking, but now it is one of my favorite activities. I am sad because I need to drive a lot in Hawaii and I miss walking everywhere.
The study abroad experience really touched my heart and I will remember Korea forever. Now that I am back in Hawaii I will appreciate all the good things about being on a beautiful island. Throughout the blog I posted pictures from Korea, so in this last post I will add Hawaii pics!!!!
